Preparing Your Fibreglass Swimming Pool For Winter

As the winter months close in, the cold weather will trigger most New Zealanders to begin the process of preparing their pools for winter.

With the lack of regular use, pool preparation and ongoing maintenance needs begin to change slightly. Homeowners will need to protect their equipment – and the water itself – from the long winter days ahead.

Here are just a few ways to prep your fibreglass swimming pool for winter to make it a breeze to re-open it when the summer comes around again.

Clean your pool

With usage dwindling, it may seem counterintuitive to worry about what your pool looks like, but those leaves beginning to collect on the top will sink to the bottom and begin to decompose over the winter months, feeding algae and other microbes that will make your pool water change colour and throw off its entire pH. Leaves could also end up settling in equipment, clogging important pipes and filters. That’s why it’s important to get out the skimmer at the beginning of winter and clear away any debris.

Check your equipment

Even in the winter months, most New Zealanders will need to run their pump for at least four hours a day, so it’s important to ensure everything is in working order. Make sure your pump is working and there is no calcium build-up on the chlorination cell.

Clean your filter

You will need to clean contaminants from your pool’s filter, and in order to do that, you will need to backwash it. To backwash a filter:

  • Shut off your pool pump, roll out the backwash hose and check the waste line for any closed valves
  • Turn on the multiport valve handle to backwash, or slide a push-pull valve
  • Turn on the pump. The water should flow out of the backwash pipe or hose
  • Backwash until the water runs clear (approximately 2-3 minutes)
  • Shut off the pump, turn the valve back to “filter” and turn the filter back on
  • Note the lower pressure on the filter tank, and the increased flow rate

Balance your water

Balancing your water in the winter months will make opening the pool for the summer months a breeze, so make sure not to skip this step! Balancing the water – and keeping it balanced throughout the winter months – will help subdue algae outbreaks and help your pool equipment last longer. You may also want to add a phosphate remover to your pool’s water as well. Adding phosphate helps remove algae’s food sources and keeps it at bay.

Cover your pool

By covering your pool during the winter months, you ensure that all the skimming you did earlier to protect the surface does not go unrewarded. A pool cover will keep more debris from falling into the pool, protecting your pool’s pH balance and keeping debris from entering your filtration system where it can also cause havoc if it’s allowed to build up. A pool cover will also protect your water from evaporation, meaning you’ll have to add in less new water when the summer months return.

Continue basic maintenance throughout the winter

It’s a smart idea to continue to check your water’s chemistry and the filter gauge every two weeks. That way, if there is a problem, you can address it early. By being pro-active in the winter, your pool will be in perfect working order come summer.
