Deciding on the primary purpose for buying a swimming pool will help you to decide on the best type of swimming pool for you; a spa pool won’t be useful for someone who intends to use their pool for serious exercise.

How Much Do You Want to Spend? 

Pools come in all shapes, sizes, and most importantly, budgets. Large and highly-complex models can reach close to and over $100,000. Whatever the budget you have, there is sure to be a pool to suit, but it’s still important to know what your limits are. Don’t forget to account for optional extras such as additional lighting, heating, entertainment, or landscaping as well. 

How Much Space Do You Have? 

Backyards come in all shapes and sizes, but luckily so do swimming pools. The space you have available may be limited by several factors from the physical size of your yard to other backyard features already in place, and placement in relation to sun and wind exposure. Knowing how much space you have available when planning your swimming pool will help you to select the best option. A compact lap pool, for instance, is great if you have limited space but want to be able to exercise, whereas a larger pool with areas for both exercise and relaxation may be preferred if space permits. 

What About Pool Filtration? 

Chlorine and mineral systems are two of the most common pool filtration systems you will have to decide between. Chlorine systems are probably the type you will be most familiar with for commercial swimming pools. Chlorine systems are great at keeping the pool clean, but they also involve storing and handling the hazardous chemicals required on a regular basis. 

Mineral water systems, on the other hand, use magnesium to help keep the water crystal clear. The addition of the magnesium also has the benefit of leaving the water feeling silky soft and luxurious, which is great for hair and skin, unlike harsher chlorine systems. 

Concrete or Fibreglass? 

Concrete and fibreglass are two of the most common pool construction materials you will come across. Both have their pros and cons so research them in detail before committing, but generally, fibreglass pools are the better option for most people. Fibreglass pools are reasonably priced, have a long low-maintenance lifespan, and while not as customisable as concrete in terms of shape, come in a wide variety of pre-built shell designs. 

Researching a Pool Builder 

Selecting the right pool builder will make the process of buying and installing a new swimming pool that much smoother. It’s best to start your search locally. Local-based builders will not only be cheaper due to lower shipper and transport costs, but they may also have specialist knowledge of the area to help with planning, permits, and excavation.
